Tutorial: Capture Low Resolution P-JPEG From DV

June, 2001

The following is an excerpt from the DV Companion - The Intelligent Assistant for Final Cut Pro

About this tutorial:
So you're a documentary film maker and you have a gazillion hours of footage and you want to capture every single minute of it and you don't have anymore space on your table or inside your Mac for more Hard Drives or money for a Capture Card. What do you do? Well, the following How2, by
Phil Hodgetts is going to show us what lafcpug member Sean O'Sullivan discovered while fooling with Quicklime 5, FCP, firewire cables and a kite and a key on a stormy day. Yes, it IS possible to capture DV via firewire at low resolution for offline editing.

Technique

Capture Low Resolution P-JPEG from DV

Theoretically, and practically, there is no low resolution version of the DV Codec currently available. However, if you are working with a fast G4 (500 MHz or higher, dual processor preferred) you can use a software transcode to capture in lower resolution, more compressed version.

WARNING: This is not officially sanctioned by Apple. It appears to work reliably for fast G4 computers and capture correct timecode even when frames are dropped, but no guarantee is give. Test the accuracy and reliability for your system before performing any mission critical or important work. These settings have been tested with DV Input only.

    Create a Capture preset:

For NTSC duplicate the DV NTSC 48 KHz Capture Preset and set:

    • Frame Size to 320 x 240 (For 16x9 try 320 x 180)
    • Digitizer: DV Video
    • Input: Sony DV or the default setting.
    • Compressor: Photo - JPEG
    • Quality: 50% but you can experiment with higher or lower values.
    • FPS: 29.97
    • Leave QuickTime Audio settings at the default for the DV NTSC Capture Preset unless you need to capture 32 kHz audio (in which case set the rate to 32.000kHz).

For PAL duplicate the DV PAL 48 KHz Capture Preset and set:
    • Frame Size to 320 x 240 ((For 16x9 try 320 x 180)
    • Digitizer: DV Video
    • Input: Sony DV or the default setting.
    • Compressor: Photo - JPEG
    • Quality: 50% but you can experiment with higher or lower values.
    • FPS: 25
    • Leave QuickTime Audio settings at the default for the DV PAL Capture Preset unless you need to capture 32 kHz audio (in which case set the rate to 32.000kHz).
Capture using Log and Capture or Capture Now. Log and Capture is recommended.
On slower processors the capture may have dropped frames, particularly during the early part of the capture. Regardless, the timecode seems to be accurate during a recapture at full DV resolution. Add 2 second capture handles so the portion of the shot you want to use is past the dropped frames.
Edit the Sequence using a Sequence setting that matches the capture settings:
    Size: 320 x 240 or 320 x 180
    Square pixels
    Codec: Photo - JPEG
Frame Rate: 29.97 or 25 fps
    Edit the Sequence
When you are ready to capture at full resolution, trim the Edited Sequence(s) by creating a New Offline Sequence with Media Manager.
    • IMPORTANT: used for situations where users may not be able to complete the task successfully or theirs or other users' activity may be slightly disrupted.
Batch Capture the Trimmed off-line Sequence.

Philip says: "Don't forget, even on slower systems you can capture in DV then export to Photo - JPEG for offline editing. Export all Clips to Photo - JPEG and relink the Clips to the Photo - JPEG versions."
