We welcome Jon Chappell from Digital Rebellion who will show off CinePlay. What is CinePlay? CinePlay is a professional Mac media player complete with timecode overlays, markers, masking, safe areas and cloud playback support.

Also we welcome Director of Production for the LA Kings Hockey Club, Aaron Brenner. Aaron just wrapped a huge project for the Kings, essentially turning 100TB of footage into a 90min doc. Here is an exerpt.

Join Gurus Monica Daniel, Philip Hodgetts Michael Kammes and Adam Bedford as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning FCS and FCPX, Avid, Premiere Pro and anything else you can think of. If they can't solve your problem or answer your question, then you go home with a problem, but you still got out of the house, so that's not a bad thing.

His company's post production software is used by freelancers, production companies, studios and Fortune 500 companies worldwide to fix problems, optimize workflows and manage their teams.

About Aaron Brenner
Aaron Brenner is the Director of Production for the 2014 Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings. Alongside a cast of talented and creative professionals, Brenner leads an in-house production team that produces original content, oversees internal video needs, and is a driving force behind the LA Kings' content strategy. Currently in his seventh season with the LA Kings, he's covered two Stanley Cup Championships. For his work covering those runs, he won an Emmy Award in June 2014. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California and flies a helicopter to avoid traffic.

9:00PM - 9:40PM - VFX on a Budget- Scott Squires
From Scott:
This presentation is aimed at filmmakers who have need of visual effects to tell their story, but lack a blockbuster (or anything close) budget. Legendary visual effects supervisor Scott Squires will take the audience through many tips and techniques to get the most out of whatever budget you may be forced to work around. He will cover the value of visual effects, why they are expensive and how to approach projects to get the most out of your visual effects. You won't necessarily be able to create Avatar yourself for $10 after watching this, but you will better understand how to deal with visual effects as a filmmaker in a productive manner.

About Scott Squires
Scott Squires has a full range of experience working with both traditional and cutting edge digital techniques to create photo real visual effects. His career began with the development of the Cloud Tank Effect for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” His creative and technical problem solving combined with his knowledge and experience has allowed him to achieve the artistic vision of his directors. Squires received Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for “The Mask,” “Dragonheart” and “Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.” He also received a Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his pioneering work in the area of Film Input Scanning.

Squires co-founded Dream Quest Images where he was a Visual Effects Supervisor, as well as the company’s president for six years. Dream Quest was a leading visual effects facility from 1979-2001 before it was purchased by Disney Studios.

After running Dream Quest, Squires was recruited by ILM where he worked as a visual effects supervisor and commercial director for twenty years.

An avid inventor, Squires has developed a number of tools and processes to accomplish his work. Squires developed Commotion, a visual effects software package for doing rotoscoping, animation and compositing. Squires founded Puffin Designs, Inc. in 1997 to market Commotion which was acquired by Pinnacle Systems which was in turn acquired by Avid.

For Van Helsing he developed a technique to shoot bluescreen actresses to match predefined animation. On Dragonheart he wrote a program to gather data from a digital surveyors tool and also convert it into the necessary data format to load into a 3D application. He also wrote the software for doing the exploding star sequence in Dragonheart.

Squires has recently developed iPhone applications including a Paint Program (Squiggles), a video puzzle game (Fliparoni) and an iPad note taking app (NotesToStore)

Squires is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences -Visual Effects Branch. Squires is on the board of the Visual Effects Society.

He is a Director of Photography in the International Cinematographers Guild.

Enter through the gate on Hollywood Blvd just West of Berendo. The theater is at the top of the hill, adjacent to the art gallery.

From US 101 (heading South),
take the Hollywood Boulevard exit.
Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Hollywood Boulevard.
Turn right into the entrance to Barnsdall Art Park at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard. (you will only see a parking lot. Drive to top of hill to find the Gallery Theater)
The Gallery Theater is in the center of the park.

From US 101 (heading North),
take the Vermont Avenue exit.
Turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Vermont Avenue.
Turn left onto Hollywood Boulevard.
Turn left into the entrance to Barnsdall Art Park at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard. (you will only see a parking lot. Drive to top of hill to find the Gallery Theater)
The Gallery Theater is in the center of the park.

Metro Red Line
Yes, Los Angeles has a subway and if possible you ought to use it. Riders are dropped of at Sunset and Vermont, one long block from the Art Park. More info on the Red Line can be found here.

PARKING: Parking is FREE. There is ample parking on top of hill near the Art Park. Parking extends around the perimeter of the Park. NOTE: Please park your car diagonally even though the spaces are not marked that way. What to do if I cant find a place to park?
Park at the Kaiser Hospital Parking lot. Download directions HERE - or...

1. Turn right on Hollywood Blvd
2. Turn right on Vermont Ave
3. Turn right on Sunset Blvd.
4. Turn right into Kaiser Parking Structure
5. Park on rooftop
6. Take elevator down to Level 2
7. Exit at Parking Entrance on Barnsdall Ave.
8. Cross Street to Barnsdall Park
9. Use Stair or elevator to Park
10. Climb stairs and follow signs to Gallery Theatre
11. Cost is $4.00 (I think) And security is provided.

Wheelchair access: Park in the lot next to the Hollyhock house (you will see a handicap parking sign), come into the theatre entrance, and take the elevator down. There will be space in the front of the theatre for wheelchairs.

Before or after the meeting, there is a fine restaurant row on Vermont between Hollywood and Franklin (just around the corner from the park). There are also a number of funky ethic eateries along Hollywood Blvd.
